If you do not use proxies for internet access then you don't need
to do anything.
If you do use proxies for internet access you still shouldn't
need to do anything. The climateprediction.net software should pick
up your proxy settings from the settings in your browser.
So before reading any further, first try the software. The chances
are you don't need to do anything at all.
The information below was relevant for older version of the climateprediction.net
software. It is kept here to provide information in case your installation
of climateprediction.net has problems accessing the internet because of
proxies. The software has been tested on machines using recent version
of Internet Explorer. We don't yet know whether the facility to pick up
proxy settings will work if you have an alternative or old browser. We
will update these pages as we gather further information.

Some organisations use proxies to control the flow of web traffic.
These may be set up in a fairly complex fashion with different proxies
for different types of internet communications, or they may be simple with
only one proxy for all web traffic. If you do not use proxies then no action
is needed. If you are not sure, try the climateprediction.net client
and it will tell you if you need to look at this issue further, when it
tries to connect to our servers.
If proxies are required, then they can be set up in one of 3 ways:
· Using Internet Explorer
· Using Netscape Navigator
· Using the climateprediction.net client
If you use proxies for your internet connection, it is likely that they
will already be defined in either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
The climateprediction.net client can pick up these settings. Unfortunately
it can only pick them up if they are defined using a very particular format.
Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are less "picky" about the format
so even if you have proxies set in your browser you may need to either
adjust the way they are defined or redefine them in the climateprediction.net
client. In the future the client will be developed to remove this inconsistency.
So if you need to adjust your proxy settings here are the ways you can do it.
Be sure to carefully follow the formats of the URLs indicated.

«» Setting up proxies using the climateprediction.net client
If you do not have Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator installed on
your machine, or if you do not want to change your current settings in
these applications, then you can set up the proxies to use in the climateprediction.net
client itself.
When you first start-up the climateprediction.net client, the registration
form appears.
Click on the Proxy Server Configuration button at the bottom of this
form.
In the Address: textbox on the Proxy Settings form which then appears,
enter the correct proxy string. The proxy string should be formatted
as follows:
-
If you use the same proxy for all connections (http, https, ftp etc) then
enter its URL, e.g. http://protection
-
If the proxy server is not on your local network, then you will need to
include the full address of the proxy server, e.g. http://protection.proxy.co.uk
-
If you have different proxy settings for http and https connections, then
you need to specify which proxy should be used for which protocol.
This can be done by putting the protocol type (e.g. http or https) in front
of the proxy URL followed by an equals sign.
-
e.g. http=http://protection
to specify that the client should use the proxy http://protection for
http connections, but should use no proxy for https connections.
-
e.g. https=http://protection
to specify that the client should use the proxy http://protection for
https connections, but should use no proxy for http connections.
-
e.g http=http://protection https=http://secure-prot
(note the space between the two proxy settings)
to specify that the client should use the proxy http://protection for
http connections and the proxy http://secure-prot for https connections.
-
When you have entered the correct proxy settings for your internet connection,
click on the OK button on the Proxy Settings form.
-
Complete your details on the Registration form and press Register.
If your registration fails, for whatever reason, and you close the
registration form, your proxy settings will be lost and you will have to
re-enter them when you next try to register your client.
If your registration succeeds then the client will store your proxy
settings in its status files and you will not need to enter them again.
You can change your proxy settings at any time by selecting the Internet
Settings menu option on the client, and the Change Proxy Settings submenu
item. This will bring up the Proxy Settings form, which you can use
as detailed above.
