To take part in the challenge of the climateprediction.net experiment you need to
download some software which runs on your PC (whenever you are not using the processor for other
jobs). The climateprediction.net software is a version of the Met Office's state-of-the-art climate
model.
Since August 2004, climateprediction.net has moved to the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for
Network Computing (BOINC). This software platform provides a lot more flexibility for both the project
and its participants. Participants can choose to allocate their time to one, or more, distributed computing
project. BOINC supports Mac and Linux as well as Windows computers.

If, for whatever reason, you do not wish to use the BOINC software platform, you can chose
to participate in the climateprediction.net experiment directly by following the
instructions below. We recommend this for participants taking the Open University short course
and for U.K. schools who will be using course notes etc. based on the original software.
- Check the technical
requirements - ensure that your fulfil the minimal recommended
conditions to be able to run the model on your machine smoothly and
without experiencing major difficulties.
- Have a look at the typical
participants' questions - this is a very useful source of information
that helps to answer many usual questions.
- Download
a climate model - register and accept the license agreement to be able
to download and then run the model.
- Run model and process results - decompress the zip file. Run the model
by double-clicking on the downloaded executable. The model will send
us back your results, and in the meantime, you are welcome to explore
our interactive and still growing User Area and give us feedback.
